On this day in history, October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty was unveiled to the United States of America. More than 1 million people attended the celebration including then-president Grover Cleveland. President Cleveland formally accepted the Statue of Liberty as a gift from France as a symbol of unity and friendship between two great nations. Festivities included the first-ever ticker-tape parade in honor of the statue of “Liberty Enlightening the World”. Firefighters, soldiers, and veterans marched down Broadway in New York City to the sounds of 100 brass bands, cannons and sirens. The Statue of Liberty stands tall overlooking Lower Manhattan on New York City’s Hudson River. Happy Birthday to Lady Liberty!
